I have really not given this Bigfoot matter much thought for the past several years, and have only told a very few people about my close encounter with a Bigfoot, but since I have been hearing a lot on this matter lately and seeing it frequently on the History Channel, I thought I would share my experience with the rest of the world. I encountered a Bigfoot type creature in the early AM one morning back in 1959, during my service in the United States Marine Corps, while driving alone from South Carolina to Indiana.

I was on leave, at the time, and had planned to drive all night, in order to get the long drive behind me where I could spend more time with my old high school friends in Indiana. I got very sleepy sometime after midnight during my drive through the Smokey Mountains in North Carolina and decided to pull over at a mountain top observation lookout point and close my eyes for a few minutes. So I parked in the small observation area, and found that I was all alone in this unlit and very dark area, which didn’t bother me, as I remembered that I was now a United States Marine, and feared no man.

I don't know how long I had been sleeping when I unconsciously felt something starring at me while stretched out in the front seat of the car. I slowly opened my eyes, without moving my head or body, to see what might be causing my psychic senses to feel as though I was being watched. All of a sudden I saw this dark hairy apelike creature, standing about seven, or eight, feet tall, and starring point blank at me through the front windshield on the drivers side. I immediately sprang up from the front seat somewhat in a state of shock. When I sat up the creature instantly bounded in front of my car and headed thru the bushes. I said to myself, at the time, that it was probably a bear, and cranked the car and drove off. As I drove, I continued thinking about my encounter with the creature. I realized that whatever it was, it did not run like a bear, as this thing stood upright and appeared to have an apelike face. It also ran in stride like a person.

I was glad that I had locked my car doors before I took my nap, otherwise, I might have had the privilege of being the first person ever to engage in hand-to-hand combat with a Bigfoot creature. My Marine Corps training did not even tempt me to pursue that creature through the forest, as I simply wanted to depart the scene as fast as possible. Since that occasion, I have been very selective in picking a roadside spot to take an emergency nap during long drives.

I can't be sure of the exact location of my sighting since it was before the interstate highway system, I remember I was driving North on US 25, and I think I was about a half hour, or so North of Ashville North Carolina (around Hot Springs NC) when I experienced the "Bigfoot" creature. 

It was certainly a very memorable experience; one that I will never forget.  I have never really believed in the "Bigfoot" phenomenon, per se', but as I compare my experience to other stories I have seen in TV documentaries, I now really think there might be some merit to the existence of a "Bigfoot" creature, who is maintaining their solitude and secrecy by being a nocturnal creature.
