Bayhead Swamp - Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary - 4:00 p.m.

I was hog hunting and had just jumped a group of hogs unexpectedly. I was trying to relocate the group when I came out into a saw grass field. The saw grass field was approximately 700-800 yards long and varying widths. A cluster of small swamp areas called bay heads surrounded it.

I was looking into the afternoon sun when I saw a dark object at the edge of a bay head in front of me -approximately 80 yards, ahead.

I thought it was a bear and I got down low in order to stalk closer to it, I was carrying a shotgun. I came within 20 to 30 yards away and I rose up to fire.

This is when it also rose up and turned at the waist to look at me. I realized I was not looking at a bear. I froze solid and forgot I was holding a shotgun. After about 10 seconds it turned and walked on two legs into the swamp.

After I got my breathing back to normal I went to the spot he had been standing. There was a terrible odor like rotten eggs and sulphur and the grass was bent down where he had been.

By looking at how low the tree limbs were and remembering where his head came to I was able to determine that he was approximately 6 and a half to 7 feet tall. I estimated his weight at 350-400 lbs, - solidly built. His head seemed to have a crest, I could not see the face well because of the sun.

I left the area that day but have been back many times to look for it. I have found hairs, scat, and unidentified marks on the ground but have not seen it since.

I have notified other organizations; my wife and I tell the story in my speeches. As I always say, - "ALWAYS BELIEVE---HE IS OUT THERE."
